It's very simple. Dogs and cats and other talented animals have tails; their tails, with their thousands of flourishes, provide them with a wonderfully complex language of arabesques, not only for what they think and feel and suffer, but for every mood and vibration in their feeling tone. We have no tails, and since the more lively among us need some form of expression, we make ourselves paintbrushes and pianos and violins..." _Hermann Hesse

The Words I didn’t want to Hear

I just came from the Veterinary Medical Specialists where Elbee spent the night last night. She’s doing very poorly and has had several grand mal seizures since Dec. 23. There are multiple issues and in the words of the specialist, ” Her prognosis is not good.”

These were the words I expected, but had hoped not to hear. It is highly likely that we will have to make the difficult decision to let her go tomorrow or Thursday. We’re expecting some additional test results back tomorrow, but they’re not likely to give us a real solution.

We know that she is in the very early stages of renal failure, but there are other complications. There is the possibility of a brain tumor. She would be 13 years old on January 12th and she’s had a good life. I would not elect to put her through the stress of  brain surgery and radiation, given the circumstances.

Elbee came to us on her first birthday as a physically weak and terribly frightened little creature. But I never gave up on her. Out of that seemingly fragile shell, an animal with an incredible depth of spirit, a will of iron and a purity of heart emerged. She has been a great gift to so many people over the years, and my constant companion.

She was home for Christmas Eve and Christmas, surveying the going’s on from her favorite perch. She had a good holiday, spending much of her time in our laps. Yesterday she went downhill and we had to rush her back to the Veterinary Hospital in the evening. A turnaround isn’t likely at this point. Please send a little message to her so she knows that many people care. It will mean a lot to her – and to me.

  1. You are all in my thoughts. Please give her a scritch for me.

  2. A hug for you both.

  3. So very sorry, hugs to you all.

  4. Derri passed last week after she didn’t come out of a seizure…she’d been having them. I think, though it’s hard, sometimes saying goodbye on your terms when you know it’s close is a good thing.

I’ll forever remember Elbee as she was when she first came to live with you.

  5. I am so sorry. Hugs to you all.

  6. Oh Elbee, have your mom give you a hug from me. You know how much she has always loved you. Let her know that it’s ok with you if she lets you go.

Kathy, I know how hard this is for you. We are all here for you.

  7. This is hard news, Kathy, you and Elbee are in our prayers.

  8. Ah little Elbee. Say hi to Sidney for us and tell him that I miss him everyday.

Kathy, my heart aches for you. I know how you feel right now and it is never easy, whether the news comes swiftly and unexpected or slowly and unavoidably.

Hugs to Sage and Denali too.

Aroos from all the crew here.

  9. Oh, Kathy! How I feel for you.. I remember Elbee running around the ranch last Thanksgiving, bossing the “puppies” around. She obviously loved you so. I’m so, so sorry.

Let’s plan a “tree” get together soon.

    Hugs from all of us.

  10. Hi Elbee,

We met a long time ago. You probably don’t remember me, but our moms are friends. Anyway, I just want you to know that it’s OK to say good-bye to your mom and dad. It’s actually much harder on them than it is on us. Really. Where we are is AWESOME. I know you’ll miss your “old” life, but just for a day or two, you won’t believe the cool stuff that goes on here.

I’m best friends with your old friend, Bart. He’s great, btw. My mom and dad are here too, and so is a really neat dog named Sidney. We all hang out together. Yes, Cardis and Pems do mix well together. The best part? We’re all young again. We chase things, there are toys galore, and we can eat all we want without getting “lunch muscles.”

I know it will hard to leave your humans, but we’re waiting for you with open arms, especially Bart, and we can’t wait to show you the wonderful world that awaits you.

  11. Aw, Kathy.

I am so sorry. I know how hard this is.

    Elbee, good girl. Good girl.

  12. I’m so, so sorry. These little furry people have such a way of touching our hearts that it’s hard to let go. My thoughts are with you, and a ear scratch for Elbee too.

  13. Elbee, I have loved learning about you and seeing you since we came to ForPaws over 6 years ago. It is hard but your folks will be fine and have years of loving you to review, Barbara

  14. I know it is hard on your Mom, you have kept your promise to be a good dog and now she will keep her promise to take care of you. May it be easy on you.

  15. Oh Elbee. Don’t be afraid. You have never met my heart dog, Yankee. But she is at the bridge and would love to meet another petite corgi (even if you don’t have a tail).

You will be best pals, I know. And both the queens of all you survey. Say woof to her for me!

    Dog bless.

  16. So sorry she has not improved. My heart aches for you. Hugs for both of you.

  17. Oh Kathy. I am so sorry to hear this. I am continuing to keep Elbee in my thoughts.
